Fan error on an ASIC miner: diagnose before you replace
A fan warning does not always mean a dead fan. Four quick checks that tell you whether to reseat, clean or replace, and what to buy if it is the fan.
A fan error is one of the cheapest faults to fix, and one of the easiest to misdiagnose. Fans fail, but connectors also work loose, cables get pinched, and dust can slow a healthy fan enough to trigger a warning. Work through the checks below before you order a new one.
What you’ll need
- A small screwdriver for your model
- A can of compressed air or a soft brush
- A known good fan, if you have one, for swap testing
The checks
- Read which fan the miner reports and what speed it shows. Compare it with the other fans in the same machine.
- Power the miner off, unplug it, and let it cool. Never work near spinning fans.
- Look for anything touching the blades: a pinched cable, built-up dust, or debris. Clean gently and spin the blades by hand. They should turn freely and quietly.
- Reseat the fan connector firmly at the header. Many miners use a multi-wire connector for power, speed signal and control, so a half-seated plug can look like a dead fan.
- If the fault remains, swap the fan with one that works. If the error follows the fan, the fan is bad. If it stays in the same place, look at the header or the control board instead.
If you do need a new fan
- Match the size, voltage and connector of the original. The label on the fan lists them.
- Match the airflow rating as closely as you can. A weaker fan can cause overheating even if it spins.
- Fit it with the airflow pointing the same way as the old one.
Caution: Do not run the miner with a fan unplugged, even for a short test. Many models will overheat in minutes.
When to stop and get help
If swapping fans does not change the error, or you see burn marks near the fan header, stop. The fault is on the control board and needs a repair shop.
Quick checklist
- Powered off and unplugged first
- Blades clear and spin freely
- Connector reseated
- Swap test done
- Replacement matches size, voltage and connector
Safety first: unplug the miner and let it cool before opening it, and never open a power supply unless you are trained to. Repairing a miner may void its warranty.
